The Racetrack Playa, Death Valley

The Racetrack Playa is the magical place where rocks move mysteriously across a dried-up lake bed, leaving trails in their path. It is located towards the northern end of Death Valley, and is reached by travelling down a 26 mile long un-made dirt road - an SUV or a 4x4 vehicle is recommended! It is not well signposted, apparently deliberately so, in order to prevent coachloads of visitors arriving and possibly damaging the rock trails. The trailhead at the start of the 26 mile drive is located at Ubehebe Crater. When you arrive at the lake bed, go past the first parking area on the right and head all the way to the south of the lake bed, which is where all the stones with the trails are located. Sunrise or sunset are best, to produce the longest shadows extending from the rocks.
